Halifax summer activities to enjoy this year!
Happy summer, everyone! We’re just a couple of weeks away from the official start of the season. That means it’s time to start planning your Halifax summer activities. Living in this city gives us access to some of the best summer events, and we’re here to point out a few specific winners. Here’s to a great summer season!
Halifax Pride
Pride is one of Halifax’s most famous events, and it’s also a summer favourite. Running from July 20th to 30th this year, Pride brings together a blend of events and education to support the LGBTQ+ community. Over the course of 11 days, you can enjoy up to 150 unique experiences across the city, all designed to combat oppression and foster a sense of community and growth.
The full calendar of events and vendors has not been released for Pride 2023 yet. However, last year’s schedule included experiences like drag shows, music, trivia, dancing, and of course, the famous Pride parade. Events are spread out all over the Halifax region, so odds are you’ll find something interesting nearby to check out!
Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market
Everyone loves a morning spent at the farmers’ market, especially in the summer. Those in Halifax are in luck because the Seaport Farmers’ Market is the oldest continuously running market in North America, making it a must for your summer to-do list. Operating from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, you have lots of weekend time to check out the market’s offerings. There are over 100 vendors ranging from baked goods to coffee, cheeses, soaps, produce, and meats.
The Halifax Seaport itself is a great district to check out as well. You’ll find galleries, shops, and cafes to explore. Whether you’re a local or a tourist in the city for the first time, this is an excellent way to spend a day.
Halifax Seaport Cider & Beerfest
Another fun offering from the Halifax Seaport is the Cider & Beerfest! Running from August 10th to 12th, this event allows you to sample 300 unique beers and ciders. In fact, more than half of the festival’s drink options aren’t available locally. Last year’s event featured beverages from across the Maritimes as well as Ontario, and international locations like Ireland and Belgium! This is a great chance to test out some new and exciting drinks. Of course, the festival always provides some excellent food options as well! Last year’s food vendors came from Asado Wood Fired Grill and Jamdouns Jamaican Canadian Cuisine. If you’re 19+ and looking for an extra fun Halifax summer day, this is the place for you!
Go cycling
Halifax is a very bike-friendly area. Even if you’ve lived in Halifax your whole life, cycling through the city brings you a fresh view of the places you may have only passed in your car. You can check out the biking scene on your own, or rent from I Heart Bikes and select one of their various interactive routes. This option allows you to choose a path that suits you best, and you can enjoy specific points of interest as you pass them by. The city and its surrounding areas are full of beautiful trails and paths that are perfect for cyclists of all ages and levels. This is a great way to experience the city while also getting in some fun exercise.
Hit the beaches
Finally, you can check out some beaches for a Halifax summer activity. Most people think of tropical destinations, or adventurous California waves, when they think about the beach, but we have some nice options here as well. In fact, Crystal Crescent, Rainbow Haven, and Conrads Beach are all great choices, and they’re all within a one hour drive of the Halifax core. You can make it a day trip and spend some time relaxing on the sand, taking a hike, or enjoying the refreshing water. Who needs to fly to the Caribbean when you can take advantage of these local options?
The Halifax summer scene is full of events and activities to enjoy. No matter what your interests are, this city has something for everyone this season. Be sure to explore the area this summer and take advantage of everything our beautiful city has to offer!
