How can you get your home, and yourself, ready for selling in 2025? Here are five ways to start preparing before we hit the new year.
How to get your yard spring-ready
Spring is officially here! After yet another temperamental Nova Scotia winter, you’re probably excited about the prospect of warm weather and spending some time outdoors. Before you can lounge on your lawn, though, you need to get your yard spring-ready. Spring is an essential season for your yard, because it requires the most attention and care. Between gardening, lawn maintenance, and cleaning, there’s certainly a lot going on this time of year. Here are some tips to help you get going on creating a beautiful, spring-ready yard!
Get your green thumb ready
Whether or not you enjoy gardening, a bit of proper landscaping and flower beds never makes a yard look bad! It’s time to channel your inner green thumb — even if it’s buried deep down. Don’t worry, because even the most amateur gardener can make their yard look nice this spring with some simple tricks. For starters, you can select some basic, low maintenance plants to add to your garden. Daffodils, geraniums, and marigolds are flowers that are pretty hard to kill, and can thrive in many environments. They don’t require the constant pruning and sheltering that sensitive flowers like roses do. You can also add greenery and shrubs to fill in empty spaces of your yard, or to frame a walkway. Not only will you have your yard spring-ready in no time, but healthy gardens are great for the environment as well! You’ll attract handy critters like toads and tough pollinators like bees, both of which support a balanced ecosystem.
Focus on lawn care
Depending on the size of your yard, you might be looking at a decent amount of lawn care to prepare for spring. If you have a lawn mower, it’s time to make sure it’s all tuned up and filled with fresh oil, and any old debris is cleared off. You may also want to consider an aeration service, which will puncture your lawn with small holes to allow air and water to get to the roots and help the soil thrive. You should also fertilize and seed your yard to fill in any dead or bare areas of grass, and help maintain a healthy lawn. Finally, you’ll want to make sure your lawn is watered regularly throughout the season. If you don’t tend to get a lot of rain, you can use sprinklers on your lawn to soak it when the weather gets dry.
Bring out the furniture
One of the best ways to get your yard spring-ready is to haul out your patio and lawn furniture! Depending on whether or not you expect any more snow in your area, you might be in a good place to prep your yard with your patio chairs, tables, and benches. These accessories automatically make a yard look more inviting, plus they give you an extra spot to relax if the weather allows it. Be sure to give all your furniture a rinse down and inspection to make sure it’s all in good shape, so you can replace it early in the season if needed.
Wash your windows
After a winter of snow, sleet, and general muck, your windows are likely looking a little worse for wear. If the glass is spotted, streaked, or grimy, spring is the perfect time to give your windows a wash. You might want to hire this job out to a company, depending on your comfort level using ladders if you live in a house with more than one storey. If you decide to do it yourself, you can create a simple mixture of water and a dash of dish soap, or water and vinegar. The solution doesn’t have to be fancy, but sparkling windows will make your home look more inviting inside and out.
Clean out your garage
Finally, spring time gives you the perfect chance to clean out your garage. While you’re hauling out patio furniture, washing down your cars, and maybe bringing out bikes or other outdoor accessories, you may as well spend some time getting this part of your home and yard spring-ready. Our garages are a perfect storage area, but eventually they get crowded and require a good, deep clean. Clear everything out, sweep the floors, and start sorting through your items. Get rid of clutter, and reorganize what you want to keep. You don’t have to throw everything away, but every once in a while it’s good to make sure everything in your garage still serves a purpose for you.
Getting your yard spring-ready definitely takes some work, and you don’t have to do it all within a day. Take your time as you leave the winter season and embrace the warmer weather. The good news is for many of these tasks, you can hire a company to take the work off your hands if it’s overwhelming for you. Once your yard is set up for spring, you’ll be in good shape for the season. Plus, if you‘re considering selling your home, a beautiful yard will put you in a great position!
