Sean Fraser calls for bold action on Atlantic Canada’s economy
Federal cabinet minister Sean Fraser delivered a call to action to Halifax business leaders Tuesday, October 14, 2026, urging them to prepare for major changes in Atlantic Canada’s economy.
Speaking to a packed Halifax Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, Fraser, Canada’s minister of justice, attorney general and minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, offered his thoughts on a new report examining the region’s economic future.
In his address, Fraser said that there are a lot of pressures not only on the economy of this region, but on Canada as a whole.
“The house we are living in isn’t built for the coming storm,” said Fraser. “We have to build a new one, a purpose-built one.”
Unprecedented growth on the horizon
Atlantic Canada is facing what could be unprecedented growth in its economy. The region already employs over 20 per cent of the people working in Canada’s defence industry, and with the announcement of a new fleet of submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy, that number will surely rise. The report that Fraser was referring to is a document called Bolder Ambitions, released earlier this year by the Atlantic Economic Council. The group surveyed 100 CEOs and 1,000 people from across the region on how to create a strong economy for the region.
“I want to build communities that no one will want to move away from,” said Fraser.
The report addresses several areas, including unifying power grids, removing interprovincial trade barriers and working as a single entity rather than four separate provinces.

A call to action for business leaders
While the minister’s speech to the 350 people in the room didn’t bring any new announcements or funding, it did serve as a rallying cry to business leaders in the city to roll up their sleeves, to dig into the report and act on some of its recommendations before it’s too late.
What does this mean for you?
With this kind of economic news on the horizon in our region, it’s a great time to take a look at your own situation, a call to arms at the family level, so to speak.
Do you have your credit in check? Has your income situation changed over the last 12 months? Have you accumulated more assets?
Ask yourself these questions. The result may surprise you.
