My background
I was born and raised in a small town in Nova Scotia. After high school I went to St. Mary’s and I did an undergrad.
I thought I was going to be an HR manager. I thought I was going to manage people and I thought I was going to be in that type of industry. Honestly, I don’t think mortgage lending and real estate was ever on my purview. It’s something that kind of happened by chance.
You know, I always had the taste for being in business. I knew that I wanted to be in business for the long term I just didn’t know what type of business I wanted to be in. As I was graduating from university I went and I asked a mortgage broker for a job. He didn’t think was a good fit I decide I was just going to do it on my own and you know 12 years later here I am.
The marketplace
You know we’re in an instant gratification culture. Getting a credit card is very easy you can ply online. Getting a car loan you walk into the car dealership and you’re Auto approved
Mortgage lending is not that easy and yeah a mortgage is a mortgage as a mortgage but there’s a lot of features pricing rates that really are different from lender to lender.
We’re doing the research and we’re putting the file together and we’re able to give you that expert advice. Sometimes it’s not apples to apples you know it’s apples to oranges and sometimes what you need to do is you really need to have the unbiased advice.
Our approach to business
Really the relationship is with the client our relationships not with the lender. I would much rather have someone working for me than working for someone else.
With mortgage lending, every day is a different day and every file is a different file. That’s really what makes it unique. We’re really excited to be able to help the people that live here in Halifax and Atlantic Canada you know obtain their dreams of homeownership.
In larger markets, they’re just doing purchases. They’re doing purchases for clients who have a job letter and a pay stub they wouldn’t even think of entertaining someone who’s self-employed or maybe have some credit challenges or are looking to restructure their debt with a refinance. Here we’re doing all kinds of different transactions and we really think of ourselves as a full-service mortgage brokerage. You know we’re offering that full spectrum of services and products to our clients. At the end of the day, knowledge is power and this is a daunting industry there’s a lot of uncertainties. People don’t understand how mortgage lending works and I think that you know sometimes that can be a little bit scary. I think coming to an unbiased mortgage professional you’re really able to take that knowledge and turn that into success.
